Video Application for the Best Job in the World

Posted by on January 28, 2009 at 10:30 am.

My video application for the Best Job in the World has now been uploaded to the official website! HOORAY! I’ve been checking the website, islandreefjob youtube account, Tourism Queensland’s twitter account and facebook account constantly for the past week so I’m ridiculously excited that it’s finally up! :D

What’s the Target Market for the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef?

I was catching up on the discussion boards on the islandreefjob ning page when I came across the discussion about whether Tourism Queensland would hire an individual, couple or family for the job. I hadn’t even considered whether they would hire a family since the job posting was for one person and I haven’t seen any family applications. But then it got me wondering about the target market for tourism on the islands of the Great Barrier Reef.

Tip #2: Find Out What Everyone Else is Doing

Tourism Queensland has a twitter feed where updates about the position and how to apply are posted. They also have a youtube channel where you can view some promotional videos and see who else is watching. Personally, I would’ve chosen something like “islandreefjob” or “tourismqueensland” over “whereelsebutqld” as a name but whatevs.

Tip #1: Upload A Video Under 10MB

I know the website says that you can upload a video up to 100MB, but you can’t. You’ll get a message that reads something like “The File ID provided does not exist or is invalid.” I believe the maximum people have been able to upload is 10MB.

Morten’s instructions: Export the video as an .mov file using H.264 encoding from Premiere Pro (my vid ended up being 40MB) and then run it through QuickTime PRO to reencode it (Final product: 6MB).

Why I Decided to Apply for the Best Job in the World

I had one of those ‘revelation’ moments last week where you figure out why it feels like there’s a rock lodged between your chest and your stomach. It turns out my rock was a result of spending the last five and a half years working towards a career I didn’t love. Yeah, it kinda sucks that it took so long to figure this one out. But at least it was discovered now and not at the ripe age of 40.

Creating the ‘Hire Anny’ Video Application

We started filming yesterday afternoon in my room (which now looks like a tornado hit it), and had to rush because the sun was setting and we needed the light to film the rooftop clips. On a foggy day in Vancouver, it looks like all the clouds in the sky have decided to take a break from floating and plop right down on the city, making the hilltops look like little islands in the sky.
